Below are the two models of wood burning systems I recommend and use.  Because I make all of my own burning tips for detailing fish carvings, a high power unit is necessary to run some of the extra large tips I use.  I have used all of the other commercial brands on the market over the last 20 years and even built more than a few homemade versions as well in my quest to achieve more power than what was commercially available.  Most worked fine for smaller scale burning tasks but failed miserably when the big tips were needed.  Then I tried a Burnmaster a few years ago in the prototype stage and loved it.  It would run the larger 16 gauge wire I use with ease and keep a constant flow of power to even the largest tarpon and arowana scales I burn.  And do it for hours without any fluctuation in tip temperatures.  Something the others could not do.  Not even my homemade highpower systems.

UPDATE: Now that I have tried the new 50,000 RPM MicroCarver / Burner Combo units I am sold on the quality and need for one of these precision detail units.  The new combo units have a 130 watt Burnmaster Hawk unit built in.  So now for classes I can have a unit that can carve and burn detail all in one machine!  No need for multiple machines all over the place.   I have used one now since November of 05 and LOVE IT!  The only thing it's missing is an airbrush port!  If your new to fish carving and don't have a burner or a ultra high speed carver (yet) my advice ...look into the new combo grinder/burner.  You will save money and have a compact quality unit that does it all.
